Today couldn't have started out any nicer. After waking up and getting Sir Shits Alot (Baby's got crap!) some milk, we were greeted by our new best friend, Katie.
Yes, she is that close to our pad - the WeeBothy at Redlands Country Lodge. The owner, Kate, said she always dreamed about being able to look out her kitchen window and see her horse - now she can! Dreams do come true.
The night before, her husband Alan suggested that we take a trip to Tentsmuir Beach - it was a little out of the way from where we were headed in St. Andrew's but we didn't have a ton of things on the agenda so we decided that we had enough time. He said it was stunning and this was the first of a few things that we saw today that matched the hype.
The road winds through a number of small little towns, past a RAF (Royal Air Force) base and then on some country roads. You end up heading through a forest. It looks to be a small pine forest but it was quite beautiful. Nice and quiet and cool. You get to the parking area below:
Shortly thereafter, you are headed down the dunes and on your way to the beach. We took turns carrying the baby as the sand was rough and we were in flip flops.
The trail opens up to a bay. You can look back to the horseshoe shaped forest behind you and the beach (when the tide is out) is massive. We continued down to the water, which surprisingly wasn't that cold. If we had known about this place, we probably would have spent the morning there hanging out and letting Sir Shits Alot eat sand because that's what he does at the beach. He tries to be sneaky about it too. I had to run over and dig a whole mouthful out and then we were back to running to the water and wanting to go in way past the spot that we could with out having a full diaper of seawater for daddy to carry us back the third of a mile back to the car in.
The beach really was a nice treat and I am glad that we got to go there and spend some time. We headed on our way towards St. Andrew's - and no we didn't even stop at the course.
St. Andrew's was one of the places I was dying to visit. There is a ruined cathedral there that is massive and it was this that we really wanted to go and see. We parked by the university (where Wills met Kate) and walked down to the cathedral. Even the university (which I believe is dated at least from the 1500's) was very cool looking. The cathedral though is ten times better.
The cathedral was the center of catholicism in Scotland and was basically overrun and wrecked by the Reformation with the clergy literally being violently expelled from the site.
The cathedral is massive and really gave me an appreciation of just how large the ones that are still together are. Also on site it St. Rule's Tower, which is in decent shape and if you paid for admission (we're are members of the Historic Trust to be more economical for the trip) you get a coin and you can climb up the tower.
That's the tower on the right, below is the view from the top.
After coming down from the tower I found Jess and Sir Shits Alot in the cloisters. He decided to spend his remaining time at the cathedral torturing a seagull. He didn't know that the real torture was the fact that he didn't have anything for the stupid bird.
They begin the dance...
He gets closer...
Outsmarted!
That seagull won this battle by jumping over the wall where Sir Shits Alot could not get him. It's not over though!
Well, it's morning and we need to get on the road. We will have no access for the next two days. I will finish up today's blog as a separate post.
See you in a few days.
